The temple sits on the edge of a highland lake more than 1,200 metres up. Built in 1633 for Dewi Danu, the lake goddess, its best-known shrine is an eleven-tiered black-thatched meru on a tiny island just offshore, so it seems to float. Mountains wrap around behind, and in the morning mist lies on the water. It's far cooler than the coast, almost chilly in the wind. The grounds are manicured gardens and paths with a family-park feel; the inner shrines are for worshippers only.
